MASVINGO – Masvingo United FC returned to winning ways under new coach Patrick Mandizha after edging Chivhu FC 1-0 in a tense midweek fixture at Mucheke Stadium on Wednesday.
The win marks a sign of resurgence for Una Una, who have struggled for form following recent boardroom resignations and a reshuffle of the technical team.
Both sides started brightly and traded attacks in the opening exchanges, but defences on both ends held firm.
The breakthrough came in the 23rd minute when Amicable Sibanda finished off a well-worked team move to give Masvingo United the lead. It proved to be the difference in an otherwise cagey and physical contest.
Buoyed by the goal, Una Una dictated the tempo and pushed for a second, but Chivhu’s backline stood firm.
Chivhu responded after the break and looked to hit Masvingo United on the break.
The visitors created several half-chances after breaching the home side’s rearguard, but lacked the final touch.
Masvingo United also missed opportunities to double their advantage. A quick interchange down the right flank produced a dangerous cross, but there were no takers in the box.
As the game wore on, Chivhu pushed for an equaliser in the closing stages but were denied by resolute defending and a string of fine saves from the Masvingo United goalkeeper.
Delighted supporters welcomed the result after weeks of turmoil.
“We are happy that Vakomana played and defended well. You all know about the boardroom squabbles and the departure of our key executives, but we are slowly getting back on track. This gives us hope that the team will finish in a respectable position on the log,” said one fan.
A Chivhu FC official rued missed chances.
“We created enough to get something from the game. Conceding in the manner we did cost us. We will go back and work on our finishing,” he said.
Masvingo United now turn their attention to a tricky away fixture against Mutare City next weekend, while Chivhu FC will host GreenFuel at Garwe Stadium as they seek to arrest their poor form.
