Masvingo, — On World Sight Day, the “Love Your Eyes” campaign shines a light on SolidarMed’s transformative work in rural Masvingo, where the organization has been driving accessible eye care since 2019.
Through groundbreaking fundoscopy screening for diabetic retinopathy conducted at local clinics, SolidarMed has brought sight-saving services to communities that historically faced barriers to access sight treatment assistance.
The initiative has yielded tangible outcomes beyond screening.
SolidarMed’s efforts have supported surgical interventions for patients with retinopathy and cataracts, expanding treatment options for those in need.
“In addition, district ophthalmic nurses have been empowered through targeted training in retinopathy screening, improving local capacity to detect and manage eye disease early, a statement indicated.
A key pillar of SolidarMed’s approach is leadership in tele-diagnosis, which has redefined early detection.
Remote assessments and timely referrals now enable patients to receive prompt care, reducing delays that often lead to vision loss.
This telemedicine framework has become an integral component of eye health services in the region.
In the past two years, 2023 and 2024, the program has conducted more than 2,000 eye screenings.
This milestone speaks to SolidarMed’s steadfast commitment to combating diabetic retinopathy, widely referred to as the “silent thief of sight.”
By prioritizing regular eye checks, particularly for individuals living with diabetes, the organization continues to promote preventative care and early intervention.
“Community awareness campaigns have further amplified the reach and impact of these efforts, reinforcing the importance of protecting vision and advocating for equitable eye health” the organization added.
As World Sight Day is commemorated, supporters are urged to embrace the spirit of “Love Your Eyes” by backing initiatives that safeguard sight and advance health equity.
In Masvingo, the message is clear: loving your eyes means trusting dedicated professionals who work tirelessly to preserve one of our most precious senses.
“Partners, communities, and policymakers should join hands in sustaining and expanding these vital services to ensure that every person has the opportunity to maintain healthy vision,” SolidarMed said
