Harare- As political discontent grows across the nation, calls for mass demonstrations have intensified, with political parties and citizens weighing the risks and potential impact of the public action.
Messages circulating in political circles emphasizes that any attempt to mobilize the public must be carried out in a controlled, lawful, and transparent manner, and should avoid provoking unnecessary clashes with law enforcement.
In a statement by Togara Fambi, President of the National Progressive Democrats (NPD), he argued that the country remains under a government which they characterized as corrupt and abusive.
“The message stresses the importance of a coherent plan, including clear leadership, sanctioned procedures, and details on speakers and organizers, to ensure demonstrations are peaceful and impactful,” he said.
Fambi cautioned against opportunistic factions within the ruling party, urging citizens to resist being drawn into tactics that could undermine the broader democratic goals, especially on the call by Geza for a one million men March on October 17
He added that any constitutional amendments aimed at delaying elections or altering the electoral framework must be approached with caution and transparency, and that demonstrations would only be considered in response to credible, legal triggers such as election irregularities or constitutional manipulation.
He insisted that the police should not be stopped from protecting public order, while also affirming the public’s right to peaceful assembly.
“The message reiterates a strategic objective to rally support for the 2028 national elections and to work toward achieving a decisive victory within a lawful electoral framework,
“2028 represents a critical juncture for Zimbabwe’s political future and calls on all reasonable Zimbabweans to participate in a unified, consensus-driven effort under the General Consensus.” Fambi a retired police officer added.
The stance reflects a broader mood among opposition factions seeking to channel public discontent into structured political engagement rather than spontaneous demonstrations. Stakeholders are urging citizens to participate in sanctioned activities and to avoid actions that could trigger a crackdown or lead to violence.
“While change is desired, it must be pursued with discipline, transparency, and a clear plan for democratic transition,” Fambi said.
