Mucheke Stadium-Masvingo United Football Club (Una Una) shot to the top of the Pacific Storm Eastern Region Soccer League after cruising past Chivhu Fc by a goal to nil.
The first half saw intensity from both sides seeking the opener in an entertaining match played at Una Una favourite hunting ground.
Una Una created many goal scoring opportunities but could not convert the chances which came their way.
The match went to half time tied at nil all.
The second half saw both teams returning rejuvenated seeking the opener.
Una Una were eventually rewarded when their player was felled inside the box and the centre referee pointed to the penalty spot right away much to the chagrin of Chivhu players and their technical team who nearly walked out of the game before full time contesting the penalty.
Agrippa Murimba stepped forward when the dust had settled and coolly slotted home giving Una Una the precious lead which had eluded them.
One nil it ended giving Una Una an advantage at the top, one point ahead of FC Hunters who fell 1 nil away to Renco Mine.
Masvingo United spokesperson Omen Mafa said they are now one foot ahead after a hard fight.
“At last we are on top of the table. It has not been an easy road. Our guys fought hard. We are on top for now but we have to fight. We have Hunters FC in Marondera. It’s an important game for us and for everyone. Today’s results have shown everyone that the game of football is everyone’s game. It has been proven that we never donated points to Renco Mine but they are a good side” said a relieved Mafa.
A day earlier GZU FC played against FC Wangu Mazodze in a low key Masvingo derby in which they shared spoils at Gaths Mine Stadium.
The visitors FC Wangu Mazodze dominated play and were all over the home side in the first half creating many chances which they failed to bury.
GZU FC goalkeeper Deon Mundiyashi made crucial saves keeping the Kingdom Boys at bay.
The Students upped their game in the second half but could not turn their dominance into goals.
Nil all it ended with a share of spoils in a tightly contested encounter between cross town rivals.
FC Wangu Mazodze spokesperson Courage Kandira said the game was evenly contested leading to the draw.
“It was a tightly contested match. Our opponents enjoyed a greater part of the game but our boys created many chances that could have given us a win we needed the most. We went there with a positive spirit but that one point was enough considering GZU’s form and also home advantage. We were both fighting to move places away from the relegation zone but football being football it ended in a stalemate. We try and build up for the next match.” said Kandira.
Una Una face FC Hunters away next week in Marondera in a must win encounter in order to consolidate their position on the log.
