Masvingo-Some residents in Masvingo have expressed concerned over persistent water shortages after they went for the whole week with dry tapes.

The residents say water is now a scarce commodity despite the fact that it is their constitutional right to have it.

A resident in Runyararo west, said they are struggling to survive without the precious liquid.

“This is dangerous to our health and a violation of our constitutional right the local authority should address the challenge as soon as possible before we encounter water bone diseases” said Mercy Shumba.

In Statement from, Masvingo United Residents, and Ratepayers Alliance (MURRA) said

“On behalf of the residents, I wish to express our profound concern over the debilitating water crisis that has, once again, gripped our city.

The situation, particularly in areas like Masvingo West which has now endured 7 consecutive days without a single drop of water from their taps, is utterly dangerous and constitutes a severe humanitarian and public health emergency” said MURRA chairman Thomas Mbetu

He added that access to clean, running is a fundamental human right and a basic municipal service that residents should have.

This prolonged outage disrupts daily life, threatens hygiene standards, and poses a significant risk of disease outbreak.

It places an undue burden on families, the elderly, and vulnerable communities who are forced to seek unsafe and expensive alternative water sources.

“While we acknowledge the historical challenges of water supply in our region, the current frequency and duration of these failures point to a critical need for urgent and transparent action from the Masvingo City Council, said the MURRA Boss.

MURRA calls for the following.

The immediate deployment of water bowsers to all affected areas on a predictable and reliable schedule, prioritizing key areas like clinics, schools, and the affected high-density suburbs.MURRA called for detailed and public explanation from the Council on the precise cause of this specific failure, the steps being taken to resolve it, and a realistic timeline for full restoration of supply.

The Alliance demanded commitment to publicly present a comprehensive, coasted plan to address the city’s aging water infrastructure and secure a sustainable water future for Masvingo.

MURRA also stated that it stands ready to engage constructively with the City Council to find lasting solutions. We will continue to advocate fiercely for the rights of all ratepayers and residents to receive the services they deserve.

Masvingo City Mayor, Aleck Tabe said there was a fault which has since been attended to and normal supply will return.
