Harare— The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) is intensifying its fight against the smuggling and sale of drugs, announcing two major seizures in separate operations across the country.

In Chipinge, a tip-off led to the arrest of Tafadzwa Mare, 33, at Chiutani Village, Ngungunyana, on suspicion of unlawful cultivation of cannabis plants totaling 110.

In Beitbridge, two suspects were nabbed near the 80-kilometre peg along the Beitbridge-Masvingo Road in connection with unlawful possession of approximately 310 kilograms of dagga, 1,600 bottles of Broncleer Cough Syrup, and 1,050 bottles of Astra Pain Cough Syrup.

In a statement police said the suspects arrested along the Masvingo Beitbridge highway were travelling in a Toyota Hilux bearing registration AGP 8990.

Police say the Chipinge arrest came after a crime tip helped officers uncover the illicit cultivation site.

In Beitbridge, Leonard Mushava, 34, and Opprah Ndavambi, 30, were detained following the vehicle stop that uncovered the contraband substances.

The arrest has been welcomed by anti-drug abuse individuals who said that these operations is a sign of a broader nationwide push to disrupt drug networks and protect communities from the harms of illegal drugs.

The country is reeling on the surge of drug and substance abuse particularly among the youths with critics pointing to high unemployed rates as a major cause for the scrounge.

The police has been on a national campaign inviting the public to continue cooperating by reporting suspicious activity or potential drug-related crimes, as part of efforts to strengthen national security and public health.
