GZU hosts Former Deputy Prime Minister Professor Mutambara Public Lecture

Leading tertiary institution Great Zimbabwe University is set to host a public lecture to be delivered by former Zimbabwe deputy Prime Minister, and renowned academic, Professor Arthur Mutambara on October 6.

The lecture will run under the topic why and how Africa should embrace the AI revolution.

The landmark event will be hosted at the Auditorium Robert Mugabe School of Education.

Great Zimbabwe University Public Relations Manager, Anderson Tawanda Chipatiso, said the lecture is of great significance to both the students and the surrounding community as it comes at a time when Artificial Intelligence (AI) is transforming economies, industries, and societies across the globe.

“For our students, the lecture will provide exposure to cutting-edge knowledge in AI and its applications, helping them align their studies and future careers with emerging opportunities in fields such as data science, robotics, smart agriculture, healthcare innovation, and fintech.

Importantly, the lecture will also empower the broader community by showing how AI can be harnessed to address local challenges, improve livelihoods, and drive sustainable development.” said Chipatiso.

Chipatiso added that Professor Mutambara’s insights will highlight Africa’s potential not only to consume but also to create and lead in AI-driven solutions tailored to its unique context.

 “We believe this engagement will inspire our students, equip them with future-ready skills, and foster stronger linkages between academia, industry, and society.”

Students at the institution hailed the lecture as a timely initiative.

“The lecture comes at a time I am doing my final year research project and it will help me in understanding how I can sharpen my research skills through AI” said one final year student.

Another student said she will learn how to innovate using AI and be a leader in implementing Education 5.0.

“I am an innovator and am actively involved in supporting the Education 5.0 initiative so the lecture will empower us to learn how AI can be harnessed for innovation” said the student.

Professor Mutambara is also expected to launch his new book at Charles Austin theatre later in the evening of the same day. The tittle of the book is Deploying Artificial Intelligence to Achieve Sustainable Development Goals: Enablers, Drivers and Strategic Framework.
