Cllr Musekiwa Robbed And Shot In Suspected Armed Robbery

Masvingo – Masvingo Urban ward 8 councilor, Richard Musekiwa was robbed at gunpoint and shot during a suspected armed robbery incident on Friday at his Rujeko home in the wee hours of the night, according to officials.

Cllr Musekiwa, is currently admitted at a Private Hospital where he is receiving treatment for his injuries and is reportedly stable.

Details surrounding the incident remain limited as authorities investigate.

Local officials however suspect the shooting occurred during an armed robbery after armed robbers broke into his residence in the middle of the night intending to rob cash and other valuables.

The extent of his injuries has not been publicly disclosed, and hospital officials have not released further medical updates.

Law enforcement sources said investigations are underway to identify and apprehend the perpetrators.

Councilors and residents in Masvingo Urban have expressed concern over the safety of public figures, business people and residents in the wake of the incident.

Masvingo Mayor, Aleck Tabe, confirmed the incident and said Musekiwa is now admitted at Royal Medical Chambers.

“The councillor is currently receiving treatment at private hospital He was robbed at his house on Friday early morning and robbers got away his phone and a laptop which they found in his car”, said Tabe adding that he is recovering from the operation.

When reached for a comment, Masvingo deputy police spokesperson Masauso Patinyu said he will confirm the incident and report to the national police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi.

“Let me verify the report and after 30 minutes you can call the national spokesperson Assistant Commissioner, Paul Nyathi to confirm the case because he is the one responsible to comment on that incident,” said Patinyu.

Efforts to get a comment from Ass Commissioner Nyati were fruitless.

Cllr Musekiwa is also a local businessman who owns a grocery shop and a bar at Jazire Shopping Centre in Rujeko C and it is suspected by armed robbers who thought he keeps his cash from his businesses at home.

Cases of local businessmen targeted by armed robbers at their homes have been on the rise.
