The Bikita Rural District Council (BRDC) has embarked on massive developmental projects that have uplifted the face of the district in a bid to lure investors and make the district a middle class income economic nucleus.

Starting with the uplifting of the face of its Central Business District the local authority has installed traffic lights at an accident prone intersection along the Masvingo-Mutare road at Nyika growth point.

This move has been received with gratitude and interest from stakeholders across various sectors in Masvingo Province as BRDC has become one of the few rural local authorities to install traffic lights in the country.

BRDC Acting Chief Executive Officer(CEO), Arnold Mtuke said they were working tirelessly on the development front to uplift and transform the face of the district and turn it into a local economic hub.

“We installed traffic lights with the aim of managing problematic sections of the growth point which were experiencing a significantly high number of traffic accidents for vehicles and pedestrians, consequently losing lives.

We decided to manage the problem by installing a solar traffic light to control traffic flow and also focusing on the mordenisation agenda hence solving a problem and also focusing on modernizing the growth point,”

Mtuke added that BRDC aims to expand Nyika and make it a more attractive space for investors.

In its modernization drive the local authority also celebrated the receipt of a modern refuse compactor to improve waste collection and management recently.

“Waste management is also at the core of creating areas which attract investors through clean and smart business centers and we have taken it upon ourselves to tackle waste management through procuring a refuse compactor to properly collect and dispose waste in an efficient and modern way. We have also procured skip bins and are in the process of increasing availability of public bins to keep Nyika Growth Point clean and attractive” added Mtuke.

Residents of Bikita have hailed the intiatives by the local authority saying they are creditable and are set to uplift their lives.

“Bikita Residents and Ratepayers Association (BIRRA) commends Bikita RDC for progress in healthcare, infrastructure, waste management, and road development. The Chibvure Clinic, Pambudzi Conference Facility, traffic lights at Nyika Growth Point, improved waste services through buying Refuse truck and new dip tanks are notable milestones. Continued transparency, community involvement, and sustainability will ensure lasting benefits for all residents,” said BIRRA Coordinator Bright Madhuyu.

As if that is not enough the local authority is undertaking many other developmental projects including the construction of clinics, road rehabilitation and drilling of boreholes to improve access to water.

“We currently have several other projects going on across the district. Notable ones include the recently opened Chibvure Clinic in ward 29. We have other clinics under construction which include Dungu, Norumedzo, Matsvange, Mudzami and Chivaka doted across the district. We also have community halls which we are constructing to increase social amenities- Wards 22, Ward 11, and 32,” added Mtuke
