A Zanu PF councilor for ward 13 in Bikita Elliot Chapinda, Zanu PF who committed suicide after failing to endure polygamy challenges with his two wives who allegedly divorced him one after the other recently, has been laid to rest.
Councilor Chapinda, allegedly took poison before throwing himself into a well at his homestead after his first and second wives took turns to present divorce tokens (Gupuro in Shona) to him in a short space of time.
The sudden divorces did not go down well with him and he decided to end his life in a shocking manner.
Bikita Rural District Council Chairman and fellow councilor, Thomas Mataga, confirmed the death but said he was not aware of the circumstances leading to the suicide.
“Yes it’s true he passed on but I am not privy to the circumstances that led to his death, he has been laid to rest today, 5 November” he said
Efforts to get a comment from his family representatives were futile as they were not eager to discuss the issue.
Close sources however said Chapinda a former Agritex officer had problems with his first wife after he married a second wife who is believed to be an Agritex officer.
The first wife allegedly caused all sorts of problems to him and his second wife and eventually divorced him officially by presenting a divorce token, gupuro.
The problem continued when the second wife followed and divorced him through the same manner and Chipinda could not stomach the pressure.
“Information circulating here is that he has been having challenges with his wives, you know the problems associated with polygamy, both his wives divorced him and he could not bear the pressure and decided to take his life in a very stroppy way,” said a close relative who declined to be named.
He was buried at his homestead in Pisai village.
