Marondera- Masvingo United Football Club suffered a huge dent to their title aspirations following a 1 nil loss away to Hunters FC at Rudhaka Stadium in Marondera.
The match began with both teams showing attacking intent with Hunters coming close to breaking the deadlock as early as the fifth minute.
Una Una had their fair share of chances but could not get the opener.
An evenly contested first half went to half time with the scores tied at nil all.
The second half saw an unsettled Una Una being breached by a Cabby Kamhapa strike in the 47th minute.
Una Una sought to come back and made tactical changes but the equaliser remained elusive.
The match headed to a nervy finish with Hunters failing to convert from close range and in a flash of brilliance Una Una capitalised on the counter only to be denied by the upright post.
One nil in favour of Hunters it ended giving them a two point advantage over Una Una and Tenax who are equal on points but separated on goal difference.
Masvingo United cheerleader Keen Takawira and his travelling contingent of supporters were left heartbroken by the loss.
“We are dejected for now. There is still time for a comeback in the next two games but it’s now mathematical. We don’t lose heart we will cheer the boys until the final lap” said Takawira.
Una Una who needed at least a draw are not down and out as there are still two rounds of matches to be played with other contenders Hunters and Tenax facing each other next weekend.
In another match played at Mucheke Stadium FC Wangu Mazodze cruised to a 3 nil victory over Tongogara.
The Kingdom Boys were clinical in front of goal and fenced off attacks from the visitors.
Dylan Simango powered FC Wangu ahead in the 15th minute.
Tongogara tried all the tricks in their books seeking an early comeback but FC Wangu remained solid in defense heading to half time with a one goal cushion.
The second half was a cagey affair but Simango’s 80th minute strike silenced the visitors.
Simango’s brace was followed up by a Takudzwa Nyamana strike with five minutes to go which effectively wrapped up a convincing win for FC Wangu Mazodze.
FC Wangu Mazodze spokesperson Courage Kandira said it was a well worked win.
“It was a good game, we played with our hearts, and the players displayed a beautiful game. We came knowing that Tongogara Fc is not a small team, they have best players and most importantly one of the greatest coaches. However, confidence and home advantage gave us a resounding win we needed the most to escape relegation.” said Kandira.
