Masvingo-Local poet, educator and arts promoter Shepherd Chidima has been crowned Best Poet at the 3rd Edition of the Masvingo People’s Choice Awards, an initiative by Hevoi FM to honour outstanding talent in the province.
The glamorous ceremony was held at Urban Lifestyles Hotel on July 24. Chidima beat three other nominees: Bernadette Mukova, Kom the Poet, and Millicent Chapwanya. Winners were decided by public voting on Hevoi FM’s social media platforms.
Millicent Chapwanya finished as first runner-up.
Speaking after receiving the award, Chidima, who is also the founder of Udzamu Poetry Slam, thanked the organisers and voters.
“I want to thank the organisers and everyone who took the time to vote for me. This award reflects the support and confidence the community has shown in my work,” said Chidima.
In another milestone, Chidima and three learners from Duma Primary School, Delma Marange, Moreblessing Madhura, and Tinotenda Charamba, recorded poems at the Zimbabwe Broadcasting Corporation (ZBC) studios.
The poems, recorded under the theme _“Lest We Forget” to commemorate Heroes Day, are expected to air on ZBC TV.
The learners are members of Nhapitapi Arts Club, a school arts club chaired by Chidima and supported by teachers Gertrude Musakari and Polite Chimunyemba. The appearance gives the young poets national exposure.
“Through the club, learners are nurtured and given opportunities to develop and showcase their artistic talents,” Chidima said.
He also thanked the Duma Primary School administration, led by Headmaster Mharedzinotanga Chikosha, for supporting the learners’ participation.
“I appeal to parents in our communities not to deny their children the chance to pursue their talents. Instead, encourage and nurture them, because today’s young artists have the potential to become tomorrow’s national icons,” Chidima added.
The award and ZBC recording mark another milestone for Chidima and highlight the growing impact of Udzamu Poetry Slam and Nhapitapi Arts Club in developing young poets and preserving Zimbabwe’s cultural heritage.
